Based on an idea by Francesca Giubilei and Luca Berta, independent curators and founders of Veniceartfactory, Design.Ve brought together a scientific committee composed of Joris Montens, Ilaria Ruggiero, Francesca Valente, Nannet van der Kleijn, and Micaela Zucconi, and invited AtemporaryStudio, led by Samantha Punis and Giovanna Felluga, to collaborate as consultants, communications managers, and creative directors. Thus structured, Design.Ve presented the work of over 80 designers — either independent or representing manufacturing companies — in 12 different locations spread across two main areas, the Accademia/Zattere and Castello districts.
Since the 2018 edition, Design.Ve has changed its name to Venice Design Biennial under the exclusive direction of Francesca Giubilei and Luca Berta.
For a new map of design in Venice.
From 25 May to 26 June 2016 — in parallel with the first month of the International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia — the lagoon city became the stage for the first widespread fringe design festival.
Historic buildings, hidden cloisters, design boutiques, private galleries and unexpected spaces became the cardinal points of Design.Ve design walks through Venice, a new format dedicated to design that aims to offer a broader view of the world of design, alternating proposals from emerging designers with those from established brands, products made in industrial series with unique pieces or limited series, site-specific installations with collectives dedicated to contemporary design or names that have entered the annals of design as true international icons. The points on the Design.Ve map are ideally united by the desire to offer a variety of choices capable of speaking about design in the broadest sense of the term, investigating the cultural, ethical and social references that have driven its development.
At Palazzo Loredan, home to the Veneto Institute of Science, Literature and Arts in the central Campo Santo Stefano and the heart of Design.Ve, two collective exhibitions will tackle the theme of design from two opposing points of view: Wood Obsession, curated by the entire scientific committee, and L’innovazione nel segno della storia (Innovation in the Name of History), curated by Maggiore Design under the direction of Roberta Calarota and Simonetta Vespa.
